In a letter to parents sent from Principal Tiffany Fisher, Fisher said, "In addition to being a teacher, he served as a football coach, tutor, and mentor to many students. He made a lasting impact on the lives of those he worked with, and his presence will be deeply missed throughout our school community." The school said it has counselors and other support staff at the school in order to help students cope with the loss. "He had a lot of empathy, but he also had a lot of sympathy," Reginald Bell, Bruce's close friend said. Bell says the two met at church years ago and had been friends ever since. "I got this phone call, and he said something happened, but I didn't know what had happened," Bell said. "He explained that he (Bruce) was trying to break up a fight and the young man turned on him and got very vicious on him." Bell said he plans to be in court when the case goes to trial. "He was a provider, he was a protector and he was so loved," Bell said.
